Is the EU taking control of Middle East peace process?

by Scott Sykes

Biblical prophecy (Daniel 9:27) informs us that the antichrist will ultimately confirm the covenant between Israel and her neighbors, a covenant which for a temporary period of time, early in the Tribulation Period, will bring peace to the Middle East (although it will be short-lived; see Revelation 6). We know that the antichrist will come from the revived Roman Empire (Daniel 2 & 7, Rev. 17), so it makes sense to watch for developments involving the EU and any involvement they have in the ongoing attempts at peace in the region.

The EU already has a prominent role, through its membership in the "Quartet" (EU, UN, Russia, US), but the EU is expected to begin assuming a leadership role as we approach the Tribulation.

"EU officials call for international conference to discuss Palestinian state"

Quotes:
"Paris, France, February 23, 2010 (Pal Telegraph) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy has reiterated his call for the creation of a "viable" Palestinian state but has not ruled out the possibility the international community could recognise a new state before its borders were set."

"Speaking after a meeting with Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas in Paris yesterday, Sarkozy left open the possibility of recognising a Palestinian state before negotiations with Israel were complete. His foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, has said in recent days that he would be "tempted" by the idea."

"Foreign minister Bernard Kouchner said before Abbas's arrival that to break the stalemate in the Middle East peace process, some countries might recognise a Palestinian state before its borders were determined. Israel has criticised the idea of any unilateral initiative and says only negotiations can achieve meaningful peace."

"One can imagine a Palestinian state being rapidly declared and immediately recognised by the international community, even before negotiating its borders. I would be tempted by that," Kouchner said.

"Writing in Le Monde yesterday, Kouchner and Spanish counterpart Miguel Angel Moratinos - whose country holds the rotating presidency of the EU - called for a major international conference "to frame and give dynamic" to the peace process. After such a conference, "Europe could recognise a Palestinian state, finally allowing the Palestinians to become full members of the international community," they wrote."

Just look at what we have in this revealing article. The EU considers that an international conference that they hold can make determinations regarding Israeli borders, create a "Palestinian State", and force Israel to live with the decision. The arrogance of these discussions is astonishing.

What is also ominous about this "discussion" is the fact that it isn't isolated to this specific conference - it has been a constant message from European leaders now for several weeks, and seems to be growing in momentum. The surrounding terrorist groups are also (predictably) embracing this idea.

One way or the other, the Middle East situation will shift to the EU. With the U.S. involved in its internal problems, there has been less of a focus on the Middle East situation and it is apparent that the Obama administration will not help Israel. The UN is basically worthless, and Russia will support any legislation which favors the surrounding enemies of Israel (Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Hamas, Hezbollah, etc.) - which translates to their support for these EU proposals.

It seems obvious, without even reading these most recent proposals, that the EU will ultimately assume control of the Middle East peace initiatives. We are seeing that process begin to shift more and more to the EU, and that will predictably continue as we watch the ongoing process of the world marching lockstep into the Tribulation.

Additionally, I am also watching for more details regarding proposals on how the peace will be maintained once the "covenant" is confirmed, or, better stated, how this peace deal will be "confirmed". I believe (and this is my speculation only) that the only way to "confirm" a covenant in the Middle East is by having "peace-keeping" forces in the region. Therefore, one aspect worth watching is who will step forward with a plan to maintain the peace once the deal is signed.

Will there be a proposal to have European forces sent to the region in order to maintain ("confirm") whatever deal is reached?

We shall see.
