Truth.

A small word with so much meaning.

It is what can drive you or drive you away.  It can be painful and yet liberating.  It can make marriages and break friendships.  It’s also something hard to come by these days.  I think that’s why so many people have no faith in…… well……. anything.

That’s not to say we don’t seek some form of truth.  We just like to make sure that it conforms to OUR understanding of truth.  It makes for a much more comfortable world and personal life.

Or does it?

WORLDY TRUTH

I know.  An oxymoron if I’ve ever heard one.

People love to make pro and con lists these days to weigh out their options before making a decision about something.  It’s recommended by many professionals and told to be a process that is virtually fool-proof.  The problem is HOW you weigh what is pro and con.  What is your basis for WHY something is pro or con.  Sure you could just decide “hey, this is what’s best for me financially or socially or professionally” but the problem is you have to be truthful with yourself.  So, you have to decide what the truth is and THAT’S where we go astray.

“37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”
Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.”(John 18:37-38)

Notice how Pilate completely misses the fact that Jesus had already answered that question.  Whatever Jesus said WAS the truth because he WAS the word of God.  Pilate had already been told what the message of Christ had been by the Pharisees.  He didn’t want to acknowledge that he had to make a decision based on that truth and his actions, right after that, prove it.  Pilate immediately went out and announced that he found no fault in him in order to pass the buck and make it someone else’s problem.  He ignored the truth so that he wouldn’t be the one to have to make a difficult decision.  In light of this attitude, let’s make list of what the world sees as truth.

TRUTH                                                                                                RESULT

1) There is no real truth.  Truth is different for everyone.                        (You can’t legislate morality.)

2) There is no REAL evil.                                                     (It’s not your fault, it’s all in your genes.)

3) Free choice is better than moral obligation.                        (It’s my body, I can do what I want.)

4) I’m OK and you’re OK as long as we aren’t killing each other.     (Don’t tell me I have a problem.)

5) Whatever keeps the peace is good.                                                   (Go with the flow.)

6) All people are really good at heart.                                                    (There is no sin.)

7) The government and worldly leaders are your only hope.                   (Man is the answer.)

8) There is no Devil                                                                              (Pure mythology.)

9) There is no hell                                                                         (There is no penalty for my actions.)

10) There is no God                                                                      (Extension of all of the above.)

If you don’t have a problem with at LEAST two things on the above list, then you have a larger problem than I can cover in this article.

You see, your problem is not your pro and con list.  It’s the MEASURE by which you decide what is pro and con.  Hence, the above worldly list.

Is this the measure you would use?

Before you answer that, let me show you God’s list and then you can decide.

GOD’S  TRUTH

Now we’ll list God’s measure……..but I warn you, it’s not going to give you that warm fuzzy feeling that you may have gotten with the above list.

TRUTH                                                                                                RESULT

1) “I am the way, the truth, and the life. (John 14:6)                       (Jesus is truth and reveals morality.)

2) “There is none righteous, no, not one; (Romans 3:10)                   (We are all inherently evil.)

3) “your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit...

and you are not your own..(1 Corinthians 6:19)                           (Your body is God’s, not yours.)

4) “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him

a liar, and His word is not in us. (1 John 1:9-10)                        (We are all infected with sin.)

5) “Do you not know that friendship with the world is

enmity with God?                                                                  (The world’s ways are not God’s ways.)

6) “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

(Romans 3:23)                                                                          (We have all sinned.)

7) “But the thing displeased Samuel when they said,

“Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to

 the LORD. 7 And the LORD said to Samuel, “Heed

the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for

they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me,

 that I should not reign over them. (1 Samuel 8:6)                      (God is the answer, not man.)

8) “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to

stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:10-12)            (Satan is a real enemy.)

9) “Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into

hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him! (Luke 12:4-6)             (Hell is a real place.)

10) “The fool has said in his heart,

       “There is no God.” (Psalm 14:1)                                               (Self-explanatory.)

A very interesting list.

Think about this one question the next time you WEIGH your options in life.
