Unpardonable Sin
“Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men…Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come,” Matthew 12:31-32
The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of sin and our need for a Saviour, while Satan tries to condemn us of our sins. If we ignore this conviction, if we go through life as if there is no God, listening to Satan and his lies, we can be sure we will receive our due condemnation. “[There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” (Romans 8:1) Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the unpardonable sin. How does one tell if it is conviction from the Holy Spirit or condemnation from Satan? Are you drawing closer to the Lord, or are you being pushed away?
Feelings of remorse are from the Holy Spirit, but doubt and shunning the Word of God is from Satan. So many people believe that they’ve committed too much sin; they feel like they are beyond help. These are the people that force themselves to carry so much excess baggage because of their unbelief that they totally reject God’s plan of salvation. They may even believe in God, but their guilty conscience won’t allow them to ask for help from the only One who can help, which is exactly what Satan wants. Actually, what people need to understand is that God looks on all sin the same. My sin, your sin? It’s all the same to God. From a small white lie to mass murder, sin is sin in God’s eyes. God is no respecter of men; “…In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality,” Acts 10:34. Everyone receives the same amount of love, the same amount of grace, the same amount of mercy, and, if we reject Him, the same amount of condemnation, although there are different levels of severity when it comes to punishment.
There are those who have no use for God at all; they claim believing in Jesus is just a crutch for the weak-minded. They believe that when they die, they will be placed in a box, lowered into a hole in the ground and that will be that. Again, this is because they have listened to Satan instead of the Holy Spirit. Satan can have a huge influence on our lives if we allow him to access our minds, although we are not forced to follow Satan no more than we are forced to follow Jesus Christ. There is only one choice. Those who blaspheme the Holy Spirit, whether they are aware of it or not, are following Satan’s direction for their lives.
You say you need proof there is a God. Well first of all, we are surrounded by God's Creation…“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse,” Romans 1:20. It’s only because of the blinders that people choose to wear that they refuse to see His Creation for what it is; we have solid proof that God exists, and that He cares for His Creation. Many secular scientists don’t really believe we evolved, but to them the alternative is unthinkable. It would mean accountability to God. So they continue to push evolution on society. The Holy Spirit is unwavering in His constant prodding. But many would rather live in their sin. They like the darkness rather then the light. Their hearts become so hardened that they are given over to the sinful lifestyles they have embraced. “For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections,” Romans 1:26.
Many people are the product of a humanistic, socialistic, public school system which claims there is no God. Children are being taught the religion of Secular Humanism known as evolution, by teachers who have taught evolution throughout their public school careers. These teachers are going to wish they hadn’t done so when they finally meet God face to face. Just imagine how many young minds were corrupted by the lies of evolutionary teachings. So many have passed on into eternity and have taken that lie to their graves. Many more will go by the same route, all because some public school teacher told them we evolved from pond scum instead of the truth of how God Created us in His image. Those teachers who teach evolution to our children have created generations of unbelieving adults. Hell will be worse on those individuals who’ve led others astray than if they would have just kept their mouths shut. “Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly,” James 3:1, hence the different degrees of punishment.
“BUT there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction,” 2 Peter 2:1
Then there are those individuals who think they have committed the unpardonable sin, only because they don’t understand and it has never been explained to them just what the unpardonable sin actually is. Everyone, while the breath of life is still in their lungs, has time to repent! Everyone, even those who teach evolution! Only upon death does it become unpardonable. And it is placed on only those who’ve rejected God’s free gift of salvation unto their death. You see, all sin has been paid for in advance. Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price for all the world’s sin and He did it by dying on Calvary’s cross two-thousand years ago. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life,” John 3:16. He paid the price for all past, present, and future sin. Look at it this way: when Jesus died on that cross how many sins had you committed? None, right? So, if Jesus paid for all sin for all time, how many of your future sins were paid for on that cross? All of them, right? So you see, everyone still living has the opportunity to make the choice to accept the truth of the Gospel or reject it. Many who hear that verse in John 3:16 find it impossible to believe. They say it’s too easy. Our eternal destination should be more complex, more works oriented. This concept of salvation by works is from the enemy (Satan). Our salvation is based on the completed work of Jesus Christ. We are told to“…Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved...,” Acts 16:31. Jesus will do the rest.
As soon as we accept God’s free gift of salvation, we’re born again, and no longer condemned. Immediately God starts working on us and transforming us into the image of His Son. It’s a lifelong process, but Jesus is willing to stay the course with us. Born again believers will never be perfect in this life, but when we die God’s work will be complete and we will be perfect in Heaven. “Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect,” Matthew 5:28.
Here on Earth born again believers are looked upon by God through Jesus His Son, and He sees His Son as perfect. Therefore He sees all those born again as perfect through His perfect Son. Yes, we will continue to sin but “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,” John 1:9. Also, “As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us,” Psalm 103:12. That’s God's promise.
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a rejection of God’s truth. What truth? The truth that Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross, that He died on that cross, was buried, and arose again on the third day; that’s the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Refusal to believe in that Gospel is the only unpardonable sin unto death attached to mankind. All other sins have already been forgiven. People send themselves to Hell through unbelief; God allows them to make their own decisions on where they wish to spend eternity.
Accept the truth of the Gospel humbly, with all your heart and you will truly be born again, dodging the bullet that is the unpardonable sin in the process.
God bless you all,
Ron Graham
